In carefully examining the conflicts of this world, and especially the religiously motivated conflicts, it has become clear that there are hidden motives, ancient grudges over arguments from ages ago that have created the ground on which these battles are fought. I have concluded from my studies that one of the fundamental disagreements that has brought about much of these conflicts was between Siva and Brahma. It seems very likely that this conflict, whether between "individuals" or "tribes" or aspects of human consciousness, led to the migration of the purported forebearer(s) of Judaism, and thus to whatever degree, of Christianity and Islam, out of the parlance of Indus Valley civilization and to the Middle East.
This conflict, as I perceive it's likely beginnings, is couched in a myth regarding Brahma's desire for his daughter, and Siva's righteous retribution for said transgression. As a beautiful maiden Brahma had directly created early on in the show sought to evade the lustful gaze of Brahma (technically her father), he grows a fifth head to seek to continue to gaze upon her. Siva comes to Brahma and with his fingernail (according to at least one version) severs Brahma's fifth head as due punishment for his transgression, and to stop him from harassing his daughter. Brahma, Abraham; severing of a fifth head, circumcision.
This seems very likely connected to the story of Abraham, who fled towards the west after some conflict with the people of his homeland which was quite certainly part of Indus Valley culture (even as the Torah recounts, Abraham came from Ur of the Chaldese, quite near modern India), and established a new religion based upon a rite of severing the foreskin of the phallus--obviously analogous to a head being severed.
The names "Abraham," "Sarai" (Abraham's wife) and "Hagar" (Sarah's maidservant who gave birth to Abraham's first son and the purported progenitor of the Arab peoples, Ishmael) all have their obvious origin in myths and place-names relating to preceding analogous Indian mythic figures: Brahma, his consort Saraswati (also the name of a river, once thought mythical by western scholars until said river was discovered by satellite photography), and Ghaggar (the name of a river that was a tributary to the Saraswati River).
Now in analyzing the name "Abraham" according to Sanskrit, the "A" at the beginning of his name would designate "not," as "adharma" means "not just." Thus "Abraham" would designate either "not-brahma" (perhaps as intention to hide shame of the creator aspect of the Trimurti), or "not-brahman," meaning "not according to/abiding by the laws of nature." This would certainly fit with the hypothesis that Abraham's departure from Ur of the Chaldese was related to this unrighteous action of Brahma, i.e., Brahma's desire for, or as some versions of the myth would indicate, rape of his daughter. Not a very auspicious beginning for the three most popular religions of the "Western" world.
I do not explicate this hypothesis to condemn anyone, nor to shame the members of these religions (though perhaps to humble them a bit), but to attempt to reveal a long hidden truth that has long been suppressed by the "Western" world. To issue a few important disclaimer, I ought to note that according to geneological research my mother and one of my sisters did shortly after the death of one of my mother's parents, I may be decended, through a line of mothers, to a woman whose name indicated she may have been Jewish. This being the case, I would, by matrilineal descent, be considered Jewish by that groups delineation of descent. I was a Christian minister, though I have renounced my ordination and baptism, not out of utter disdain but out of a sense that I do not belong to said religion. I have prayed with and fasted with Muslems on Friday during Ramadan (and by the way, their pronunciation of "Amin" is much closer to the original "AUM" than the "Amen" of Christians, and even than the "AUM" I have heard uttered by many a purported practitioner of Hinduism). I am not a member of any of these groups (i.e., the Abrahamic religions), but maintain compassion and due respect (and in some cases, due contempt) for each. I do have sympathies for all groups whose intentions include righteous action and compassionate works.
Now as to the exact conclusions to be drawn from the aforementioned synthesis of mythological constructs, I cannot explicate fully in the scope of this entry. Indeed, other hidden agendas and subtle twists to this story may yet elude my study of this story that has become a drama writ large on the world stage, and which has indeed cost many lives, directly or otehrwise.
As to whether Abraham was an historical figure, or represented a sect or tribe of Brahmins(possibly promoting marital/sexual practices obviously and properly deemed unrighteous by the establishment), or some other figuration, I cannot say. This ought not, in my opinion, condemn any group of people, as none of the sects deriving from this "genesis" promote any sort of practice that promote incest, unless at some esoteric or occulted level of which I am unaware. It is, however, more than moderately likely that what I have here reported is true and accurate to the origins of these mythological constructions that have so impacted the world for four millenia, and specifically regarding the true origin of the rite of circumcision. In other words, circumcision is about the creator's wrongful desire. Draw what conclusions you will, dear reader, but recognize the razor's edge that is delineated by this revelation of truth. (see post, "Hidden Origins of the West" for information regarding the more general derivition of Judaism, Christianity and Islam from the Hindu Trimurti)

Danced Tonight . . .

Danced tonight . . . observing flow whilst dancing with apropos response and interjection to the scene I saw, accelerating a return to a better flow in fits and starts. People both in mind and manifest appear on cue, and real-er than just acting too, yet choreographed and yet here and now and self-empowered.
First band, first time on stage, something about root crops with righteous posteriors. Beetbox, rhutabega rockin', talented guitar and vocals, sweet keyboard and surprise drummers, and a nice last song i took to be about Bhoomi Devi--ya' know, Earth Mama stuff, yo!!
Second band, the getting-pretty-damn-tight reggae/generally together hippie flow of Upbeat Project. Slipped out for a toke with a friend from the first band, then returned to find a good portion of the rest of the crowd seemingly and some by self-report had followed suit, and the dance floor started to groove. Transformation via motion and music--not without a bit of natural plant and fermented catalyst and the band's second wind, and not necessarily in that order--got the last set rollin' like I like to see, sychronous groovin' bouncing 'round between musicians and crowd till a certain nata yoga is apparent to any with eyes to see...hee hee...in fact as many as three.
The unity of music and dance, musicians and dancers is some o' 'da best healing I know..therapy not based on questionable theory, but on beat, vibe, strings and skins taut with waves transmitted from human hand, keys and voices meeting a needing in the human body to expressing fluidly or otherwise the notes of Being in Unity. This is yoga!!!!

It's quite easy for an ill-informed American to criticize the mores in Islamic countries for their draconian restrictions on women. That said, let me now state with no lack of clarity: I do not support the oppression of women whatsoever. Let me also state, however, that there is much more to the story than a simple, "Us good, them bad, ugh!!"
Many Muslim women feel the "Western" attitude towards women's bodies is degrading and exploitative, and that wearing traditional Islamic garb prevents the objectification of women. There are Muslim women with PhDs who chose to wear traditional garb.
As a sadhu (if somewhat of a dilettante of one), I cannot walk around naked without fear of arrest, despite the fact that the religious tradition of the naga babas (naked sadhus) is the oldest continuous religious tradition in the world, and despite the fact that the more general religious traditions of India are whence Judaism, Christianity and Islam all find their truest source.
What I am proposing with this brief yet pointed post is not some loose relativity, but a conscientious understanding that there are nearly always valid counterpoints to any give pointed arguement. And in other words, insofar as one's exercise of freedom of choice is not directly and heinously infringing upon other's rights, there ought to be freedom to cover one's own body as one sees fit, to keep company with who one chooses with appropriate behavior, to express one's religious belief as chosen, and to not be either unjustly coerced nor to be degradingly exploited. Indeed there is a good long ways to go for both the draconianism in both restrictive Muslim countries and exploitative "Western" ones, insofar as mores and religious-based rules and the relations of men, women and whatever other genders, too. May we all learn and be transformed, without losing the beauty of difference, the vitality of variety, and the truth of unity.

Enough Bhajans and Kirtan to Play All Sivaratri Night Long (if you repeat once or twice)...
Maha Shivratri or Maha Sivaratri or Shivaratri or Sivaratri (Night of Shiva or "Great Night of Shiva") is a festival celebrated every year on the 13th night/14th day in the Krishna Paksha (waning moon) of the month of Maagha (as per Shalivahana or Gujarati Vikrama) or Phalguna (as per Vikrama) in the Hindu Calendar (that is, the night before and day of the new moon). (from Wikipedia article "Maha Shivaratri"). This year Mahasivaratri is celebrated on February 12 of the "Western" calendar...

Sivaratri Options(?)

As Shivaratri, the new moon eve in the month of Maaga (sometime in February or March), increasingly I see Devi Parvati, apparitions manifest in the field of samsara, maya—illusion—yet real, the Greater Love Story flowing through layers of opacity in the theater of life moving around my perceptual venue. Mahamaya granting glimpses of Her beauty and femininity (if not in the traditional “Western guise,” quite) in lila strewn throughout my reception of the many interpersonal plays, sketches and skits portraying those archetypal tales old as humanity, and older, which inevitably unfold before my eyes and ears and other sensory organs as I sit sipping coffee and/or smoking a cigarette with some weed or hash mixed in, or sidled up to the bar at the Buckhorn or Ranger Bar sucking suds and scanning the scene for signs of life. Glimpses of Her assure me I’m not wrong, yet leave me spinnin’ sometimes. Indeed, devotion to One such as Kali, Parvati, Shakti, Durga is no Sunday drive!!

Wonderin’ whether I oughta stay in this valley, a gap between two blades of a trishul made of three mountain ranges, with a staff that is Colorado’s Front Range—certainly an auspicious place to spend Sivaratri, especially if I spend the night in a cave in a great bana linga-yoni rock formation near here which I hope someday to acquire for a temple.
Wonderin’ whether to go to Taos, NM to the Hanuman Temple for the Sivaratri show, all night chanting and chai, middle of the night feast of Indian vegetarian delights, and bowls of Taos Big Buds and maybe even some more authentic sacrament for this night’s observances, some charas, more commonly known in the English language as hashish, smoked around the fire outside, burning by a bana linga stone half buried on the edge of the earthen firepit.

In Taos at the temple t’would be sitars and mrudungam and tablas and harmonium providing the tunes, kirtan (call and response chant) led by pujaris pouring yogurt and rice on phallic stones and through a vulval chalice, beautiful hippies and other varieties of peeps chanting along.
Other option: coyotes might sing and the wind might whisper with my solitary devotional mantras, and the willows and mountain hemlock might vibrate in the breeze like the strings of sitar, to hum along as I intone AUM and words like Shakti and Parvati, Kali and Durga, remembering Ganesha and others due acknowledgement and praise as the day gives way to night and ‘til dark night gives way again to day. Hooray, I might say, covered in ashes as the sun rises to the east and seeps into my cave, else I might cry out the Sanskrit root for said word, “hari!!”
Either way, I fully intend to spend said night in fervent devotion, wildly expressing my delight in the beauty and perfection of male-female union as divine, pure and potential (and eventually certain) destination and source. Jaya Siva-Shakti, Jaya Jaya Siv-Parvati!!! Please consider observing this night, if not in devotion, in conscientious contemplation of the wonder that is being human, male and female and genderations in-between.

Mahamaya Parvati as I See Her
Though some have stood out as closest to like Devi, Parvati, Durga, in one of so many forms in my imaginings, daydreams and devotions, I’m sometimes o’ertaken by so many lovely apparitions of feminine divine, Goddess manifest in women I chance to know, as lovers or friends or mere acquaintance wherein even is clear sign of divine Her. I look all around me, in past-times jubilance and even present languor, and whether known intimately or merely glimpsed in a crowd with one brief look of knowing, Her eyes for just one moment flashing through another’s, in some seeming random woman on the way to work, at market, coffeehouse or bar, She shows Her Presence, even if inaccessible sometimes.
Playful and sometimes harsh in Her love-play (She even bites sometimes!), sometimes teasing to teach , making love to elevate Her lover and bless the world as well as for bliss-sake, slaying to impart peace and enact compassion. Animal wild in Her actions and motions when flames—tejas—righteous stoked, whether afire for passion or punishment, pleasure to pain She knows with deepest wisdom; Greatest Yogini, Fiercest Sadhvini, Her Yoni is source of Life, Her Breasts flow forth to feed the world, Her Grace enough to melt the coldest heart, She is Pure—yet by no means chaste…
I’m sure I’ve seen Her even recently, in one lovely form or another proverbially winking at me, some fair maiden at coffeehouse or passing on the sidewalk, laughing gleefully yet not unmoved by devotions offered in each breath, for sometimes I’m sure I hear Her gasp with delight or desire as I raise my voice in intonations of sacred sounds, else in frenzied fervor of ecstatic nata, worshiping Her in wildman’s dance—devotions of a man mad with love’s spell, Kama’s arrow perhaps, or deeper far: bhakti. Jaya jaya MahaMaya!!! Jaya jaya Parvati!!!!

Narmada River Musings . . .
So I've read of many a version of myth about the Narmada River, one often less acknowledged than the Ganges, but of similar importance. One I recall was of Mahadeva emerging from the Narmada as one of the bana linga (natural linga stones found in the Narmada River's flow).
Sometimes overwhelmed, I imagine curling up as a linga, fallin' into the river and rollin' with its flow for a time, ya' know? Re-emerge when shit's blown over, ills burnt themselves out, renewal manifests. S'pose I don't have that option, 'cuz too much good work to be done, transformations and beautified manifestations, dances to be danced and sitting to be sat and fires to engage to accomplish great and good movements and purifications . . . so maybe sometime I'll settle for a shower in Narmada's flow.
Another myth of this mystical river reads as follows:
"Young Narmada falls in love with the male river Son and asks Juhilla (a tributary of the Son) to convey her message of love. Juhilla entices Son herself. The disgust and anguish of the lovely Narmada compels her to jump off the western cliffs of Amarkantak. A mere six kilometers from her genesis, the Narmada hurtles down 150 feet at Kapildhara, a gorgeous waterfall." (http://india.mapsofindia.com/culture/indian-rivers/narmada-river.html)
'Tis also said the Narmada came from the sweat of Mahadeva, Siva, Master and Progenitor of yoga, in the throes of intense meditation.

Shivaratri in Taos

Though I'm personally only loosely affiliated with the Hanuman Temple in Taos, its the best place I've been (in this lifetime, anyhow) to celebrate the all night party that is known as Sivaratri. The celebration offers devotees and truthseekers a glimpse of the beauty of the union of Siva and Parvati, and of linga and yoni (yes, SEX!!) in most pure and universal manifestation.
A past Sivaratri Celebration in Taos . . .

The celebration begins at around sundown, this year on February 12, and lasts till the sun comes up. Great chai and kirtan (call and response chanting), a campfire out front, a bit of Cannabis consumption on the semi-lowdown (smoking charas--"hashish"--is a big part of the traditional celebration of this thousands of years old celebration in India and elsewhere, but is still unfortunately not legal for devotees in this country, despite supposed religious liberty), a great middle of the night vegetarian feast, and an amazingly colorful band of devotees manifest for this party in Taos on the night of the dark moon in the month of Maagha (sometime in February or March).
Yes, it's cool the love dicks and vaginas!!!

May or may not make it there myself, but if you're in the area and feel inclined to observe this night of worship of the Divine Masculine and Feminine united, linga-yoni devotion, and good food and good worship, do stop by . . .

Kumari and Mary, Two Virgins Touted Divine

Compare the Nepalese Virgin Goddess, purported living Avatar of Durga, and generally important tantric Deity, Kumari, and the Christian and especially Catholic versions of the Virgin Mary, mother of Jeshua ben Joseph (aka "Jesus") . . .

and please do take the liberty to contemplate what the deeper story is, connects the high Himalayas and the Mediterannean's eastern shores . . .
(By the way, Kumari dates from at least the late Vedic period, more than a thousand years before 1 CE/AD).

Let's Fund Health Care With The Pentagon's Fat-Ass Budget!!

Both California and New York, as well as various other states, are bitching about money they're gonna have to pay to fund the health care changes being developed between the House of Representatives and Senate. There is a really easy and obvious option to fund even a more comprehensive and compassionate option, rivaling or bettering Canada's system, or those of various European countries: take some dough from the Pentagon's $600+ billion-a-year budget!! What the hell does this nation need so much money for "defense" when the rest of the world's spending on guns and bombs combined is only slightly greater?!?! Are those running the government afraid everybody else is gonna declare war on the good ole USA?!?! It is indeed a travesty of justice that this country won't care for its neediest, when the richest nation of the whole world, and instead spends such an obscene amount on weapons won't likely ever be used (or at least let us hope and pray)!!
"Of all the enemies to public liberty war is, perhaps, the most to be dreaded because it comprises and develops the germ of every other. War is the parent of armies; from these proceed debts and taxes … known instruments for bringing the many under the domination of the few.… No nation could preserve its freedom in the midst of continual warfare."

Really Retro Thoughts on Global Warming
Fire and Ice
Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

Hooray, hurrah!! Hari-Hara!?!?!?
I shall admit I've not gone to the trouble of dating the aforementioned terms denoting and exclaiming jubilation, nor of endeavoring to uncover whatever etymological literature might exist on said subject. Nonetheless, tis not too much to infer that these interconnected English terms are derived from--be it via "dispersion" or spontaneous or "inspired" minds connected--the figure Hari-Hara, who is half-Vishnu ("Hari")/half-Siva ("Hara"), the Maintainer and the Destroyer united as one, yet delineated down the center and maintaining the integrity of two.
This incarnation as the inspiration for terms of celebration seems self-evident, as this figure shows maintainance and the destruction of sin go more than hand-in-hand, and displays the possibilities for transformations intrinsically exist in the subtle nature of the universe and humanity. As I understand it, this form expresses the direction of powers of destruction towards purification of the state of things here and now, specifically manifest to fight some demon or other in myth but more generally expressing the application of measured destruction to maintain, that humanity might continue towards truest potential without getting mired down in the muck.
The trope of yoga ("union" or "yoke") as two becoming one in body is also presented as Ardhanarishwara, Siva and Sakti as one, an idelic representation of male and female in perfect balance. There is in fact a physical condition called tetragametic chimerism which occurs when two seperately fertilized ovum join early in a pregnancy and become one person maintaining two sets of genes. In most extreme forms, those with this condition show characteristic lines of pigmentation down the center of the body. In tetragametic human hermaphroditism one half of the body is male and the other half female (see November 2008 post, "What is Marriage?").

Hari-Hara is also known as Shankaranarayana, which is Shankara--Siva in party mode, plus Narayana--Vishnu, who's also known as Krishna and Buddha. In recognizing in what "modern science" calls a medical condition as actually indices of yoga, these ancient mythically expressed teachings show science and faith meeting in an aesthetically wholistic metaphor, in iconographic and mythic mode made accessible and rife with meaning (for another example of Hindu mythology as truly "scientific," see November 2008 post, "Ten Avatars of Vishnu: Evolution Personified"). HariHara is the potential for destruction to help maintain, for deconstruction and purification to not utterly destroy the edifice but transform and in fact strengthen. This is the hopeful proclamation that what we need is perhaps not a violent overthrow of the system, but a subtle level purge, a fire applied to temper the metal which upholds society, to renovate and remodel and dispel and dispose of corruption without need to blow-it-all-the-fuck-up!!
Anyhoo . . . "hooray and hurrah" for HariHara!!

The Story Behind "The Sound of Silence"
">
As I mentioned in a previous post, President Eisenhower, decorated WWII general, warned of the dangers of the military industrial complex in his farewell address (see post titled, "Former President and WWII General Warned of the Dangerous Military Industrial Complex"). I did not mention that some have taken his warning as a concern about a specific technology that was first being developed in the 1950s that was then known as "The Sound of Silence," and has been developed and deployed as "Silent Sound Spread Spectrum." This technology was deployed by the United States military against Iraqi troops, leading to the unconditional surrender of well over 100,000 troops hidden in underground bunkers--most without firing a shot!! Some have contended that Paul Simon, whose family purportedly had military-industrial complex connections, was writing about this very nefarious technology when he penned the lyrics to the hit song.
There is concern by some that the fedies have plans to utilize these technologies on an unsuspecting populace IN OUR OWN NATION!!!! Already, other sound weapons have been openly used on peaceful protesters in this nation during the G-20 protests just a few months ago!!! This technology, called LRAD (Long Range Acoustical Device) produces sound waves at up to 50 times the human threshold for pain, and can cause permanent hearing damage.
The more frightening possibility is that very high and low frequency sound technology will be used (and perhaps already are being used) via transmitters placed alongside cellphone transmitters--or via the television set in your living room--to subliminally control peoples minds, political intentions, and even consumer choices (see link below for info.).

Be aware, and lets not let them take our freedom of mind and thought--after all, what good is freedom of the press, the right to bear arms, etc., if they're telling you what to think by subtle sound waves while you sleep or go about your daily routines?!?!

Bhopal Went Boom With Chemical Fumes 25 Years Ago: The Dharma of Poison

On December 3, 1984, over 4,000 people died horrible and gruesome deaths as 40 tons of methyl isocyanate gas spewed into the air in Bhopal from the Union Carbide plant. Around 11,000-25,000 more would die from the residual effects of this toxin, and according to government figures, more than 500,000 others have been aversely affected by this incident, with horrible birth defects and chronic illnesses causing suffering to this day.

With this dreadful anniversary eclipsed in the environmental discourse by the ongoing wranglings regarding global warming, I have to wonder whether a clear and concise vision of global environmental priorities has been considered by policymakers. And this certainly again betrays or reveals my opinion regarding the greenhouse issue: though glad that the global warming issue is raising environmental consciousness generally, and appreciate that replacing coal-fired power plants (which spew mercury and lead and acid-rain causing chemicals as well as CO2) with wind and solar and other less impactive modes of generating electricity generally is a positive result of the discourse about global warming, I am not very concerned about the phenomenon itself. Not that I believe excessive human contribution to the accumulation of greenhouse gasses is cool, just less concerned about CO2--which life has mechanisms to deal with and is not directly toxic--than I am about mountaintop removal and other environmentally destructive modes of mineral extraction, poisons spewed into the air by the irresponsible use of chemical processes, and manmade chemical pollution generally.
As I noted in a previous post, there are historical indications (maps, narratives, etc.) that indicate the earth has been warmer in recent times (i.e., the past thousand years or two, that the ice shelves in Antartica have been ice-free in recent history ("The Truth of Global Warming: Evidences of A Warmer Side to Human History--But Coal is Still Bad to Burn"). More immediately harmful chemical and radioactive pollution, however, poison people and animals and plants, water and earth and air as soon as they are released into the environment.
As an example of the sort of irresponsibility that has been maintained by industry, there are known cancer-causing ingredients in baby shampoo and womens cosmetics, an absurd crime my younger sister Lisa has been fighting as the Breast Cancer Fund's Campaign Coordinator for the Campaign For Safe Cosmetics (http://www.safecosmetics.org/). Indeed, if we are poisoning our children from birth-on, of what consequence is a tad more CO2?!?!

(Johnson's Baby Shampoo is one of many such products shown to contain cancer-causing ingredients)
Yet here is where I must note that poisons are sometimes chosen means of purification, yet with anciently proscribed methods and modes, trial and error and meditation and contemplation brought to bear. Some sadhu and sadhvi (yogis and yoginis) intentionally ingest cyanide and other poisons to reach certain states of transcendence--an extreme "mind over matter" sorta practice that is designed to show the illusory nature of much of what is called common sense. These people intentionally take these poisons and with no intention of suicide. But for the millions and millions (if not billions) poisoned by those practices emblematic of the immature, ill considered and shallowly contemplated approach modern society and science have taken to handling substances which can kill and which poison life generally, a heinous crime cannot be denied.

Still, on a grander scale, the choice to embrace immediate convenience and innovation leading to self-poisoning might be understood as expressing humanity's ambivalence about life. Sadness and horror at suffering generally, leading to a sense of want, a gut feeling that is the disquiet of humanity in an age when solid foundations in family and tribe and nature and eternity are largely absent, and which said sometimes stupid homonids are oft given to believe can be remedied by consumer goods, which then often leads to a further poisoning of human quality of life as many aspects of the production of these goods further degrades our once good and pure relationship with nature, and thus further alienates folk from their roots.
If a person works even just eight hours a day, four or five days a week in factory or office, that is eight hours a day that in traditional society would have been spent in the field singing songs with kin and friends, at home cutting wood for the hearth fire, etc.
In a way, then, we have poisoned not only our bodies with unnatural chemicals, but our spirits with unnatural rhythms and social structures, poisoned by what in shortsighted perspective seem fixes to our problems--more or better stuff--but often turn out to reduce overall quality of life.
With this in mind, it seems at least one place to start in order to heal the relationships between people and our habitat and our spirits--clearly connected factors--is to stop poisoning earth and air and water and our children and ourselves, to take poisons of both chemical and spiritual nature as seriously as some would take "the sacred," and transform our relationships environmentally and societally to promote health and life and not mere placating shortsighted desires and consumer wants.
A recognition of the whole is necessary for a true integration of the individual, and an appropriate valuation of life and death, and those things which promote either, are necessary for health at both the micro- and macro- scale, health of the environment and of the individual. And basically, to ingest cyanide, lead, mercury, PCB or BPA or whatever potentially deadly or life-harming substance ought to be left to yogis and other conscious and willing subjects, and not broadly spread on and in an unwilling or unaware populace and animals and plants, earth, water and air.

Who Is Ho Ho Ho, Historically Yo?!?!

"santa" according to the Cologne Digital Sanskrit Lexicon:
1 santa m. = %{saMha-tala} L. ; N. of a son of Satya MBh.
2 sAnta n. (perhaps w.r. for %{zAnta}) joy L.
One of the 1000 names of Siva . . . sAnta . . . joy to the world!!!

Among various myths about the yule tree in European traditions is that the people of the village go to a hermit's cave to drag him to town to force him to grant blessings. As the village men are dragging him out of the wilderness this scruffy ascetic grabs hold of a pine tree and uproots it and holds on tight like a good tree-hugger should. Can't recall whether Scandinavian, Germanic or Alpine in origin. Nonetheless this tradition shows at least a resonant chord to sAnta as wildman ascetic in a cave in the Himalayas, if not through a traceable dispersion of traditions from East to West amongst Eurasian cultures.

And even in modern myths of Santa Claus, the underlying implication or imprint of asceticism is clear in the extreme and austere setting of this figure's abode at the North Pole--not unlike the extreme that is Kailash in the Himalayas. The idea of the ascetic blessing others who are living as householders is age old, and rooted in conceptions some might call pagan in the context of conventional European religious history, and which are encompassed in archetypal conceptualizations of Siva in the Himalayas and thereabouts, and which represent that fertility and ascetic devotion are hand in hand in maintaining health and abundance in relationships between people living on the earth and nature and cycles of the seasons and stars.

So hereagain, the cultural artifacts of the so-called "West" are rooted in more ancient stories, and Santa Claus has roots in God of ascetics and Wildness generally, Siva, who is called sAnta amongst many other names.
